coupe, pronounced koop, is a closed two door automobile with a body smaller than that of a sedan. it is also an internationally acclaimed visual culture magazine that contorts and experiments with the traditional magazine format. coupe was launched in 1999 and spent its youth and formative years in toronto. in december of 2009 we relocated the whole operation two hours north east of toronto to an old farmhouse and barn in a little town called bobcaygeon. coupe hosts a groundbreaking creative competition every year in spring. coupeís art director and editor is bill douglas. he runs the aptly named graphic design studio, the farm (formerly the bang). coupe has received worldwide acclaim for itís vanguard design and editorial bravery and innovation garnering over 100 awards in its first decade. coupe is published twice a year and is available in better book and magazine stores across canada and the usa and select outlets worldwide. Anthony vagnoni, back in 2000 said this about coupe when he selected it as his best in show in that yearís type directors club annual; ìcoupe defies conventions about the publishing business; magazines like this arenít supposed to exist in an age of global media consolidation. one would expect to find coupe existing quietly as an obscure website, yet here it is anyway.î weíre still here.
