This more than any other time is the age of personal expression, for good or bad. Facebook, MySpace, blogging, camera phones, reality tv, etc., etc., etc., have created a worldwide generation of shrewd and shameless self marketers. The internet has become a far reaching and cheap forum for personal projects, visions, and ideas. The niche genre of personal magazines, existing outside the realm of the commercial hoard, has been experimenting with this ethic for years. But, can it, or does it, still have a place in our ever more electronic world? I chat (ironically, via email) with a couple of magazine mavericks, Neil Feineman (original editor of RayGun) in LA and Brit magazine guru Jeremy Leslie in the UK, about the state of the personal magazine, and other things too. Posted on 07/04/08 Coupe art director Bill Douglas will be exhibiting in this year's Contact Photography Festival in Toronto from May 1 to May 31 2008. Posted on 20/10/06 The judging for the 2006 Coupe design and image competition is now complete. On a sweltering weekend in Toronto judges Mike Joyce, Mike Tiexera, and Bill Douglas poured over this years entries. It was a difficult process eliminating good work and choosing a 'best of show'. All the judges were in agreement that the pieces chosen will make a stunning annual. Thanks to all who entered this year. The Annual will be launched mid October. Posted on 27/07/06 Issue 15 is hot off the press and ready to be consumed. "The very best 24 typographic destinations in the fair city of Toronto, Canada. If youre into the down and dirty organic good stuff." Fifteen deep and Coupe finally devotes an issue to its hometown. Sometimes our strongest influences are the people and things in our own backyard. The stuff we can take for granted, sloff off, and ignore. If you look beyond the McDonalds, Starbucks, and Walmarts, every city has its own inimitable typographic style. Within the city, distinct neighbourhoods add their own twists and flavours to the typographic landscape we all live within. Toronto is no different. Las Vegas, Toronto is not. nor is it Cleveland, Berlin, Tokyo, or São Paulo. Toronto is unique in its subtleties, its stoicism, its place in the world. Its typography. Posted on 15/01/03 Issue 08, THE FIRST ANNUAL COUPE INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AND IMAGE AWARDS ANNUAL features a stunning array of over 85 winning works, from some of the biggest, best, and brightest studios and individuals in their creative fields. This whole thing, much like Coupe itself, was a bit of a crapshoot from the get-go. Would anyone respond? Did anyone care? Did the world really need another competition of any kind? Those nagging questions were quickly put to rest when the submissions started coming in. They came from Vancouver to Montreal, from Israel to Iceland, from Brooklyn to London. Some were bad, some flat out sucked, some were good, even very good, and some of these very good ones didnt make it in. Some entries were truly great and worthy of being in this or any other annual. And then there were truly great pieces that you will only see in coupe. Congratulations to all of those represented in coupe 08 and thanks to everyone who entered and assisted in making this crazy idea fly. Posted on 14/10/02 Issue 07. Also featured is an intermission with words and pictures by Julian Wainwright as he reports from rural Quebec on the sub-culture of drag racing. Issue 07 also includes the paintings of Mara Korkola, and the photography of Jeremy Maude, and Edward Pond. Roll it.
